Tortilla Flat
Tortilla flat is a very small, unincorporated city just a few miles past Canyon Lake on Highway 88. Supposedly it got its name from a mountain butte shaped like a tortilla. Originally it was a miner’s camp, some miner’s no doubt searching for the Lost Dutchman Mine, supposedly located somewhere in the Superstition Mountains.
Road construction while building the Roosevelt Dam in 1904 saw an increase of people to the area. Currently it has a regular population of less than a dozen people, but during the winter months the restaurant and general store are packed with visitors from around the world.
If you continue on past Tortilla Flat on State Highway 88 there will be the Tortilla Flat Trailhead, another major trail leading into the Superstition Wilderness Area. I have never personally used this trail and I understand the trail is fairly rugged. Probably not a good idea for novice hikers.
